Kakadu Green Season

Kakadu Tourism has launched a range of special cruise and accommodation offers to provide even greater incentives for visitors to enjoy Kakadu National Park during the ‘green season’.

Enjoy special cruise deals with Yellow Water Cruises and attractive accommodation packages at the famous Crocodile and Cooinda Lodge hotels from November through to March.

Sealed roads make most of Kakadu’s prime attractions accessible throughout the green season. Spectacular rock art can be viewed at Nourlangie, cooling swims can be enjoyed in waterholes such as Motor Car Falls, and hundreds of bird species along with crocodiles and other wildlife are active on Yellow Water Billabong.

The ‘green season’ encompasses three Aboriginal seasons: Gungmeleng, the pre-monsoon period, Gudjewg (monsoon) and Bang Gereng, which usually arrives in March bringing clear skies to the region. The season offers remarkably rich experiences for visitors as thunderstorms build in the afternoons, the dry land turns green, streams begin to run, and the new breeding season commences.

Yellow Water Billabong is the centre of activity for Kakadu during the green season. With cruises operating throughout the day, it’s a great time to see the Billabong at different times – and take advantage of special offers for repeat cruises.

Visitors can book a Sunset cruise and the Sunrise cruise the following day and save $65. The Sunset and Sunrise package is available for $124 per person, and includes two cruises and full buffet breakfast at Cooinda Lodge.

Special accommodation packages are available throughout the green season – from 1 November to the end of March – at Cooinda Lodge Kakadu and the Mercure Kakadu Crocodile Hotel.

The Wine and Dine this Green Season in Kakadu Package includes accommodation, with breakfast and a two course dinner, accompanied by a complimentary bottle of wine – for $249 for two adults. Valid till 31 March, 2016 (subject to availability, conditions apply).

Both hotels offer quality dining options, swimming pools and rooms with full air-conditioning and ensuite facilities. Camping and budget accommodation facilities are also available at Cooinda.

General Manager of Cooinda Lodge Kakadu, Brett Skinner, says there is a major misconception about Kakadu during the green season.

“People think it rains all the time, but on many days there is no rain at all or just a brief tropical downpour in the evening, which leaves visitors with plenty of time to see the many attractions across the National Park,” he says. “Our Yellow Water Cruises operate every day and the experienced guides tailor the tours to best-suit the conditions and the sightseeing opportunities.

“In many ways this is the ideal time to visit, because the park’s flora and fauna come alive, and there aren’t so many people around. Over two days visitors can follow crocodiles on Yellow Water Billabong, discover the Indigenous history of Kakadu at the Warradjan Cultural Centre, view the remarkable rock art at Nourlangie, and undertake the Yurmikmik Walks in the Mary River region. There’s plenty to do for everybody.”
